There are many things that we can live without but sleep isn’t one of them. Our bodies need sleep in order to recharge. In fact, there are many things our bodies do at night in order to repair themselves and get ready for the next day. Here are some super dope things that our bodies do to recharge, when we are asleep:
- When we sleep, our muscles become temporarily paralyzed.
(funny, i know but this helps us to not react to our dreams.)
- Our blood pressure and heart rate decrease.
- The production of collagen in your skin increases. (yasssss! #blackstilldontcrack)
- You lose weight. (this is through the water loss we experience while perspiring at night.)
This is also why it is so important not to eat after a certain hour. You could be counter productive to your body’s natural weight loss process.
These are just a few things that our bodies go through while we sleep. This is why sleep is so vital to us as humans. The Belgravia Center says:
Alterations in sleeping patterns have been shown to affect the body’s immune function, hormone secretion, and physical and mental stamina. The hair is very sensitive to changes within the body, and hairloss is nearly always the consequence of an internal disturbance.
Stress is a huge contribution to loss to hair, loss of volume and loss of hair shine. When we allow our bodies to become deprived of sleep, we are allowing ourselves to be come stressed because sleep depravation is a form of stress.
Our bodies recharge themselves with electrolytes at night. When we allow unhealthy sleep patterns to inhabit our lives, we become susceptible to our immune systems becoming compromised. When our body’s natural defense systems have been impacted by stress/lack of sleep, it fails to absorb the nutrients needed to stay healthy. When our bodies defense systems become compromised, we are then vulnerable to diseases. (diseases, viruses, etc) Once diseases have entered the body, that’s already weakened due to lack of sleep, our root systems of our mane become weak. This allows our hair to break, excessively shed, and fall out easily. 😣
Today’s woman is busy. We have so many things on our plate and often times we are wearing multiple hats. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a schedule that is high in demand. We must, first, make sure that we are taking care of ourselves. Eating a balanced diet to ensure we are receiving the proper nutrition and getting adequate sleep are absolutely necessary for our overall health and the health of our natural hair.
If at all possible, try to make sure that you are getting at least 7 consecutive hours of sleep per night. Stay hydrated. Eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables and learn to manage stress. You can use the best hair products in the world *insert Naturally Smitten* but if you aren’t putting in the work of living a healthy lifestyle, learning what your body needs to remain in good shape, and loving you and your natural hair, what you put on your hair can be counterproductive to your lifestyle.
